Asphalt Coatings Company Replaces Concrete at Crestone and Forms New Work at West CenterTech in Aurora, Colorado
Concrete work comes in two kinds: replacing what has worn out, and preparing ground for what comes next. In Aurora, Asphalt Coatings Company did both. At Crestone, a gated townhome community on East Iowa Avenue, the crew replaced concrete in three places. At West CenterTech on North Laredo Street, crews laid out, formed and prepared the base for new concrete on a commercial construction site.

Concrete Strips Through the Crestone Parking Lot
Asphalt Coatings Company poured concrete strips through the parking lot at Crestone. Two long strips were cut through the asphalt and poured new, one straight past the garages and one curving toward the dog park.
The crew broke out the asphalt, dug a trench and set wood forms, some bent to follow the curve. A mixer truck backed up and chuted concrete straight into the forms while others spread it with shovels. Finishers then worked the surface smooth and tooled joints along its length. The straight strip ends at an existing concrete section near the garages, and poly sheeting was laid out beside it as the concrete set.
A New Slab and Sidewalk Panel at Crestone
Asphalt Coatings Company rebuilt a slab at a unit entrance and one sidewalk panel at Crestone. Every pour shown in the project record happened in a single day.
How the Small Pours Were Built
- Remove: the old slab and one cracked sidewalk panel came out down to soil.
- Form: lumber forms, staked on the open sides, set the edges of each pour.
- Dowel: short rebar dowels were drilled into the front step and the neighboring walk so the new concrete ties into the old.
- Pour and finish: concrete filled each form and got a broom finish before caution tape went up.
Laying Out West CenterTech
Asphalt Coatings Company prepared ground for new concrete at West CenterTech in Aurora over three days. The crew laid out the edges with string lines and a laser level, set long runs of steel and wood forms, and spread gravel base.
String lines and stakes went in along the dug-out edge of the site, next to the public sidewalk. A laser level on a tripod set the height for the steel forms waiting on the graded dirt.
Setting Steel and Wood Forms
Asphalt Coatings Company sets steel and wood concrete forms on commercial sites. At West CenterTech, staked steel forms run in a straight line along the street side. The next morning, the crew carried in lumber and staked wood forms to follow a curve.
Inside the finished forms, a crew member wet down the compacted gravel base with a hose, readying it for concrete.
Gravel Along the Retaining Wall
Asphalt Coatings Company placed gravel base along a retaining wall at West CenterTech. A tall new concrete retaining wall already stood on the site. On the third day, the work moved to the narrow trench between the wall and the cut earth, where gravel was shoveled in and spread along a concrete footing strip at the base of the wall.
